When will my coverage start?

When you sign up for coverage during a special enrollment period, the date your coverage starts will be different depending on:

  • What your qualifying event is
  • The date we get your requested documents (application, Account Change Form, or subsidy eligibility form)
  • Where you live

For California - Gaining, becoming, or losing a dependent, or losing a subscriber

If you gain or become a dependent through marriage or domestic partnership registration (where recognized):

Your coverage will start on the first day of the month following receipt of your requested documents.

If you gained or became a dependent through the birth of a child, adoption, or placement for adoption or foster care:

Your coverage will start on the date of birth, adoption, foster care, or placement for adoption or foster care, or the first day of the month after we receive your application, whichever option you choose.

If you lose a dependent through divorce, legal separation, or dissolution of domestic partnership (where recognized):

If we receive your requested documents: Your coverage will start:
Between the 1st and the 15th of the month following the event First day of the month after receipt of requested documents
Between the 16th and the last day of the month following the event First day of the second month after receipt of requested documents

If the subscriber or dependent dies:

Your coverage will start on the first day of the month following receipt of your requested documents.
